Comparing the performance of two spatial interpolation methods for creating a digital bathymetric model of the Yucatan submerged platform

چکیده
Bathymetry is one of the most conspicuous variables to consider in any study involving marine environments. In developing countries, accurate and up to date bathymetric charts are rare or in most cases limited to local areas, most of them available only in hardcopy format. This is the case of the Yucatan submerged platform. In this study, we compare and discuss the performance of two spatial interpolation techniques for creating a digital bathymetric model (DBM): Inverse distance functions and Kriging. The DBM for Yucatan Peninsula submerged platform was generated using 2650 depth pointdata values digitized from navigational charts previously published by the Mexican “Secretaria de Marina” at a 1:850,000 scale. The exponential Kriging model produced the most accurate estimates, reducing the error in 18.2% compared with the inverse distance functions. Our results might become helpful to other researchers trying to decide the type of interpolation technique and selection of the model when elaborating digital elevation models for regional mapping purposes.

A watershed management program is usually based on the results of watershed modeling. Accurate modeling results are decided by the appropriate parameters and input data. Precipitation is the most important input for watershed modeling. Precipitation characteristics usually exhibit significant spatial variation, even within small watersheds. Therefore, properly describing the spatial variation o...

Hidden Markov Model is a popular statisical method that is used in continious and discrete speech recognition. The probability density function of observation vectors in each state is estimated with discrete density or continious density modeling. The performance (in correct word recognition rate) of continious density is higher than discrete density HMM, but its computation complexity is very ...

متن کاملAssessment of geostatistical and interpolation methods for mapping forest dieback intensity in Zagros forests
During recent years, oak decline has been widely spread across Brant’s oak (Quercus Brantii Lindl.) stands in the Zagros Mountains, Western Iran, which caused large-area forest dieback in several sites. Mapping the intensity and spatial distribution of forest dieback is essential for developing management and control strategies. This study evaluated a range of geostatistical and interpolation m...
